The Waltham-Whitey Bulger Connection: Murder Victim's Demise Detailed

Whitey Bulger's trial is scheduled to start in November.

Much has been written about the many murders James “Whitey” Bulger and his associates allegedly committed during their reign over South Boston, but one victim, a Waltham man, is often overlooked in Bulger’s history.

Details of the often go unnoticed in many of the books written about Bulger, but in my quest to learn more about the Bulger story, I stumbled upon a short account of Sousa’s murder.

In short, Sousa allegedly assisted in the what became a botched robbery, according to the book “Hitman: The Untold Story of Johnny Martorano: Whitey Bulger’s Enforcer and the Most Feared Gangster in the Underworld.”

Sousa, a Bulger associate, was arrested after the attempted robbery, in which Bulger’s associates were involved, of a dentist who was trying to invest money in gold. Martorano later killed Sousa in an auto mechanic’s shop with a single .38 caliber shot to the head. Sousa’s body was never found, according to the book. (A 60 Minutes interview of Martorano was done in 2008).

Now, Bulger faces charges for Sousa’s murder. Bulger’s trial for that charge and a long list of others, is scheduled to start in November, according to Boston.com
