On the article LETTER: Waltham Councillor Supports Starbucks Proposal
Tim Hill

ReplyWaltham rocks,
It is a city wide issue because of the domino effect. The developers of the property want the Starbucks and say that it is an amenity that other potential tenants want. If they don't get the Starbucks, they will not get the tenants that they believe will lead to a more profitable location. The more profitable the location, the more the property is worth and ultimately the more Waltham will see in tax revenues.

ReplyJohnnyMass,
Starbuck's employees have consistently given the company high marks for how they treat their employees and for the benefits they provide. You might want to re-check your sources.

On the article More Details Emerge on Proposed Starbucks in Waltham

Reply"City Councillor Daniel Romard said he was worried that workers from proposed office space would be in danger when crossing a parking lot to get to the Starbucks store."
While I understand that counselor Romard was not serious with this remark and that he was just throwing things against the wall to see what would stick, his remarks certainly imply that he doesn't think that the parking lot would be safe for customers of the other stores in the developement either. Did he raise this concern?

On the article Proposed Waltham Zoning Rule Change Could Limit Home Renovations

ReplyThis does appear to be moving pretty fast considering the impact on the value of people's homes. When looking to buy a cape it is common for buyers to consider the expansion possibilities. Here the city is limiting those.

ReplyAlso, let's make sure some real thought goes into the idea of replacing the computer lab with tablets as a "pilot program." Anyone who has used a tablet knows that a tablet does not replace a computer when it comes to word processing. If the idea is to buy tablets with keyboard attachments...well, we are pretty much back to laptops and need a computer lab.
Remember, this district was criticized by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for its below-average spending in technology and Nicholson claimed “the data used in the District Review comparing Waltham and State Per-Pupil Expenditures in Technology in 2010-2011 did not present a complete picture.”
Is the elimination of a computer lab the picture she wants to present?

On the article Student Shifting Proposal Raises Concerns in Waltham

ReplyLisa Limonciello criticized Tarello for changing his mind at the last minute, but anyone who watched the previous meeting saw that there were many unanswered questions. I believe at that meeting one of the committee members asked if there was room at the Fitzgerald and the answer was that it was uncertain. The Superintendent visited the Fitzgerald several days after that meeting to evaluate space issues. I applaud Tarello for making a decision after obtaining the facts rather than before. Also, this article references consolidating 4 classes at the Whittemore into 2 and then moving those students to the Fitzgerald. There is no reference to what is being moved to the Whittemore to fill the space being vacated. If nothing is being moved there, this proposal makes no sense at all as it is just moving the crowding from one place to another. Unless the real reason for this move is to artificially improve the numbers at the Whittemore school.

ReplyFrosty, you hit on the concern. We have been trying to hire qualified principals, but for a reason that is unknown to us, they don't stay very long. If there is a problem we should be trying to fix it rather than just accept a revolving door.

Is it possible that "never worked" means never legally employed? The NYTimes article said that the older brother delivered pizza on occasion. That would lead me to believe that the did it off the books.
