What's Going On With Waltham School Redistricting?

Waltham Public Schools are planning to shift some students to other elementary schools.

The Waltham Public Schools are pushing ahead with their plan to redistrict the elementary schools, according to school officials. The district is beginning efforts to gather enrollment data and a plan for how it uses building space as the first steps in the process to redistrict elementary schools, Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson announced during a Sept. 12 citywide PTO meeting at Kennedy Middle School. Redistricting could change which students a school attends. The district previously said it needs to redistrict some students because the elementary schools don't have enough space for students.  "We are watching the enrollment and it is growing," Nicholson said.  The fianl redistricting plan will be complete in time …

Waltham Votes To Forgo School Choice Program

Program allows students from outside the city attend school here.

The Waltham School Committee this week voted to not participate in the state's School Choice program. The committee made the decision during its Wednesday, April 27 meeting at Waltham High School, according to School Committee member Lisa Limonciello.  The School Choice Program allows students form other communities to attend school in outside districts.  Limonciello said the decision does not prohibit Waltham teachers from having their kids attend school in the city.

School Committee Modifies Waltham School Reorganzation Plan

The plan to reorganize the district's administration has been modified.

The Waltham School Committee last week approved several changes to its administrative reorganization plan. The changes were approved during the committee’s Wednesday, April 4 meeting at Waltham High School. The revised plan will not further increase the additional funds the district will need to implement the plan, according to Waltham School Superintendent Susan Nicholson. Waltham Schools Want Budget Increase; Lacks Reorganization Costs

Schools asking for 3.26 percent increase.

The Waltham Public School District is proposing a 3.26 increase in its budget for the next fiscal year. If approved, the budget would total $66,801,431. The Waltham School Committee held a public hearing on the budget on Thursday, April 4. The draft budget was presented at the School Committee’s March 21 meeting.  Once approved, the budget will be forwarded to the City Council to approve it as part of the city’s overall budget. Waltham Asst. Principal Named Principal in Chelmsford

Dr. Molly McMahon, currently the assistant principal at the Fitzgerald Elementary School in Waltham, has been hired as Principal of the South Row School in Chelmsford.  McMahon was appointed by Superintendent of Schools Frank Tiano after an extensive search process, according to a press release from the Chelmsford Public Schools.  One of two finalists brought by the superintendent to a panel of administrators, parents and teachers, Dr. McMahon competed with over fifty applicants. Dr. McMahon is a 2010 graduate of Boston College with her Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration.  Previously, she had earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology (Minor in Elementary Education) from Villanova University and a Master of Science …

Changes Made To School Administraive Reform Plan

Superintendent proposes changes to original proposal.

The Waltham School Committee on Wednesday approved parts of the proposed administration reorganziation plan, but only after hearing amendments to them. The committee approved several changes (see below) during its meeting on Wednesday, March 21 after Waltham School Superintendent Susan Nicholson proposed changes to her original plan. Waltham Democrats To Elect New Delegates

Delegates will go to convention.

The Waltham Democratic City Committee will soon elect new delegates at a state convention. Registered Democrats will in Ward 1-9 will hold caucuses on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Northeast Elementary School, according to announcement from the committee. The delegates will attend the 2012 Massachusetts Democratic Convention and their U.S. Senate Nominating Convention on Saturday, June 2 in Springfield.  All registered Democrats living in Waltham are welcomed to attend. Delegates will be divided equally into men and woman and the vote will be a secret ballot. Youth, minorities and those will disabilities who are not elected as delegates are encouraged to apply as  “add-on” delegates.  The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at …
