Waltham Councilors Concerned About School Budget Structure

Budget process continues next week.

Waltham City Councilors last night expressed deep concerns with the school district’s proposed fiscal 2013 budget. “Justifies nothing and represents 30 percent of the city budget,” said City Councilor Paul Brasco as he held the budget up in the air. Brasco added that the school committee should have made it more transparent and accountable to Waltham taxpayers. The concerns of Brasco and other councilors came during last night’s Finance Committee hearing during which Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson presented the proposed $67,194,041 budget for their review. A review of the minutes for the April 25th meeting (http://www.walthampublicschools.org/SC/min042512.pdf) indicates that having members of the school committee that have conflicts of interests is more harm than it is worth. Waltham Schools Want Budget Increase; Lacks Reorganization Costs

Schools asking for 3.26 percent increase.

The Waltham Public School District is proposing a 3.26 increase in its budget for the next fiscal year. If approved, the budget would total $66,801,431. The Waltham School Committee held a public hearing on the budget on Thursday, April 4. The draft budget was presented at the School Committee’s March 21 meeting.  Once approved, the budget will be forwarded to the City Council to approve it as part of the city’s overall budget. Waltham City Council Approves Next Year's Budget

Budget process complete.

The City Council last night unanimously approved a $207,707,737 budget for the next fiscal year.  No changes were made to the budget. Several councilors, however, expressed concern over the budget, which the Finance Committee recommended approval of earlier in the evening. Overall, the budget is $5,465,094 more (2.7 percent) than the current year’s budget. documents.
