Eating Organic in Waltham

Eating organic is good for your health and it's good for the planet. But sometimes, it can be hard to find. Here's where to get the best organic foods in and around Waltham.

Did you know that eating conventional produce increases your risk of pesticide contamination by 30%? And chowing down on non-organic chicken and pork increases your risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria by 33%?  This is all according to a 2012 Annals of Internal Medicine report.  If you're not already sold on the benefits of eating organic, consider this: organic foods may have more nutrients than their conventionally produced counterparts. Organic broccoli, for example, has higher levels of antioxidants and vitamin C than the traditionally produced variety, found a 2012 Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture study. There’s also evidence of more heart-healthy omega-3s in organic poultry and dairy.   So eating organic is…

Another way of thinking about this question is "Why is conventionally grown food so cheap?" The price of organically grown produce incorporates more of the true costs of growing the food - it doesn't "outsource" its costs by having to pay later to clean up pesticide or fertilizer run-off contaminating local water sources, or higher medical costs treating people (such as farmworkers who become ill…   more ›

How Will Sale of Shaw's & Star Market Change Our Local Grocery Stores?

No immediate changes planned, but store leases could eventually be sold, analysts say.

The new owners of local Shaw's supermarkets say no immediate changes are planned for the stores. There are two stores in Waltham: a Shaw's in North Waltham on Lexington Street and another on River Street.  According to the Boston Globe, there are 155 Shaw's and 14 Star Markets with 17,000 employees. In November the troubled company had announced cutting 700 jobs. The new owners, an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management, bought the stores as part of a bigger $3.3 billion deal. Cerberus also controls the locally based Steward Health Care System network of community hospitals.  The Boston Herald says Albertson's will take over all the New England Shaw's and Star Markets. Albertson's is a well-known supermarket brand name in the …

Bites Nearby: The Deli at Shaw's

Shaw's supermarket has an extensive deli with several dozen offerings and weekly specials.

This regional supermarket chain is a good option for ready-to-go foods, including several dozen kinds of salads, cooked and roasted vegetable dishes, hot chicken entrees and a bakery. The salads are particularly good, with a large choice of them, from ones with cucumber, tomato and onions, to pasta and beans, and chicken and tuna. The deli also runs a "5 on Friday" special, such as eight pieces of fried chicken for $5. Suggested dish: We dropped in the Shaw's in the shopping plaza on River Street and chose the "Pick 4" special: a sampling of four different salads for $4.99. The portions were generous and it was fun to choose among all the different possibilities. We went for Crunchy Summer Slaw, Greek Tomato and Cucumber, Deviled Egg & …
