Proposed Waltham Zoning Rule Change Could Limit Home Renovations

A proposed zoning amendment is raising concern among developers and real estate agents.

A proposed Waltham zoning amendment has raised concerns among local businessmen and real estate agents who say it would hinder homeowners’ ability to expand and improve their houses.  “These zoning changes are very detrimental to a lot of different neighborhoods in the city,” Realty Executive Owner/Broker Kevin Song told Waltham Patch. “This is going to prevent a lot of people from wanting to stay [in Waltham].” Overall, the proposal would tighten regulations for finishing basements, limit the height of residences and prevent future developments from exploiting existing loopholes, according to City Councillor Robert Logan, who proposed the amendment. It would also tighten zoning rules for parking. The City Council and Board of Planning & …

We have been considering buying a ranch in Waltham with the intent of buying under a 203k loan and adding on a second floor. If this isn't an option, we won't buy in Waltham and when our daughter is out of school in 3 years, we will move outside the city. So sad that they would restrict homeowners from adding to their homes. Most families grow and expand - how crazy!   more ›

LETTER: Chipotle/Five Guys/Panera Building Issues Are Developer's Fault

See what City Councilor Robert Logan has to say on the recent controversy around the Main Street Marketplace.

The following is a letter to the editor from City Councilor Robert Logan. This is in response to the various comments posted under the article “Delays For Five Guys/Panera/Chipotle Opening?” I am somewhat reluctant to even bother responding because most of the comments have been posted by wise crackers who think they have all the answers, but don’t have a clue what they are talking about. However, for the benefit of those intelligent few who have attempted to engage in some level of civil discourse, here is the story. FACT: The delays have all been the fault of the developer/property owner. There three “fast-food” special permits currently pending before the City Council -- Panera Bread, Five Guys and Chipotle. However, before these were …

LETTER: Waltham Is Business Friendly

The following is a letter to the editor.

The following is from City Councilor Robert Logan. Let me first address the more general issue of new businesses coming into the City of Waltham. Waltham is one of the most pro-business cities in the state. We have a commercial base that is the envy of the Commonwealth, and is headquarters for a number of large corporations. When Dassault Systèmes opened its North American Headquarters on Wyman Street last year it brought over 800 high-tech jobs to Waltham. Waltham has more Class A office space than any other community on Route 128, and more hotel rooms than any other city in Massachusetts outside of Boston and Cambridge. Waltham is attracting plenty of businesses with well paying jobs. In fact, according the U.S. Census there are 6,221 …

So Waltham has been very corporate friendly which is very different than being friendly towards business that serve the local community. I understand the issue with putting ~5 businesses into what used to be a gas station and Lex and Trapelo. But what was the problem with BOLOCO on Winter street? Aren't there already two other restaurants there (Bertucci's and the Chinese restaurant?) In that …   more ›

Mayor: Open to More Social Media Use

City Councilor Robert Logan is pushing for the city to expand its use of social media.

Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said this week she is open to expanding the city's use of social media platforms to distribute information to its residents but cautioned against potential pitfalls. "We can't go into it blind. But, we have to look into it,” McCarthy said during a Tuesday, Nov. 13 meeting of the city's E-Committee at City Hall. McCarthy made the comments in response to City Councilor Robert Logan's resolution to beef up the city's use of social media to communicate with residents. The discussion come amidst continuing complaints by city officials and residents that the city has not adequately communicated crucial information to them. For example, the city failed to notify residents of whether trash pickup would be delayed on the day…

the website is a great place to store all the information, but is not always immediately accessible from all phone & devices, nor is it timely. Most citizens are not looking at the city website multiple times of the day. They do with Twitter/facebook. Twitter/facebook is a good complement to the website and should be used to send out info when something happens AND directs them to the city …   more ›

Thanks for the comment Elaine. Personally, I'm on the fence about it. I like doing stuff online but do not want to make life for seniors and low-income residents more challenging.   more ›
