The Waltham Public Schools hope to have a new Henry Whittemore Elementary School principal by July 1.
The search for a new Henry Whittemore Elementary School principal is progressing and school officials hope to hire a new leader by July 1. The search began recently after former principal Sara Lane suddenly resigned in January. School and city officials have said they can’t issue a detailed explanation because it was a personnel matter. Interim principal Chuck McInnis is currently running the school. An 11-member committee this week was scheduled to interview nine candidates for the job and hopes to narrow the pool to around three soon, according to Waltham Public Schools Interim Human Resource Administrator George Frost. Former Whittemore school principal Sara Lane resigned in January.
Despite repeated inquiries, Waltham Public School officials have not issued a specific explanation on the recent departure of former Henry Whittemore Elementary School principal Sara Lane. Interim Human Resources Administrator George Frost told Waltham Patch that Lane recently resigned from the district, but said because the issue was a personnel matter, and he could not comment further. “We don’t discuss those in public,” Frost said. Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson referred inquiries to Frost. Interim principal Charles McInnis has taken over as the head of the Henry Whittemore Elementary School.
A Waltham school principal recently resigned from her post less than a year after taking it, according to Waltham School Committee minutes. Sara Lane resigned on Jan. 11 as the principal of the Henry J. Whittemore Elementary School, according to minutes of the School Committee’s Jan. 16 meeting. Lane was hired in July 2012 to replace Deborah Butts. The committee accepeted Lane's resignation during that meeting. The minutes do not specify why she resigned. Longtime Waltham educator Charles McInnis has taken over as interim principal, according to the minutes. The former South junior high school could become new home of the Parent Information Center.
The Waltham Public School District’s Parent Information Center may be moving to the former South junior high school on Moody Street. The Waltham School Committee, during its Wednesday, June 6 meeting, approved having Mayor Jeanette McCarthy ask the City Council to consider the move. City Council approval is required since the building is under their control. The PIC, which is currently housed at the Henry E. Whittemore Elementary School, provides parents with information about the district and connects them with various resources, according to the district’s website. Whittemore Elementary School students bone up on fire safety tips.
Do you have a fire escape plan for your home? If not, maybe your Waltham student can help you create one. Waltham firefighters this month have been imparting fire safety tips on students in the city's schools, including private schools, as part of National Fire Prevention week and department's Student Awareness of Fire Education program, according to Waltham Fire Lt. Michael Murphy. On Friday, Oct. 14, four Waltham firefighters a paid a visit to Henry J. Whittemore Elementary School students to teach them the finer points of how to survive a fire.
