Pair of Con Men Operating in Waltham

Two white men in a dark van are allegedly trying to enter residents' homes under false pretenses.

Police in a four community area including Waltham are advising residents of two suspects who are utilizing a ruse to enter the homes of potential victims. The suspects, who have operated in Watertown, are described as two white men driving a dark-colored van.  According to Watertown Police, one man will call upon the homeowner and tell them he is there to cut trees, put up a fence or to check the water pressure. While he is distracting the homeowner, the second man will attempt to enter the home and seek items to steal.  Citizens are reminded that reputable contractors rarely solicit business by walking door-to-door.  The activity has also occurred in the neighboring towns of Arlington and Belmont. Police Credit Training for Good Outcome at Watertown Shootout

Time spent practicing at the firing range paid off, police said at a community meeting Wednesday night.

Watertown Police officers faced a real life scenario that no other police in the nation have faced, yet came out with an "A+" performance thanks to the hours they spent training. Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau heaped praise on the officers who responded to the call in East Watertown that turned into a shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during the shootout. His brother, Dzhokar, who is also accused in the bombing case, was later captured hiding in a boat at a Watertown home.  Authorities have reportedly concluded Tamerlan Tsarnaev and …

Thankfully, everything …   more ›

Elation: Scene of Watertown Capture of Marathon Bombing Suspect

'This is our town:' a first-person view of how the aftermath became a celebration parade of dozens of police and fire vehicles.

It took a few minutes, but when reality sank in that the second Boston Marathon bomber had been captured in Watertown — their town — the crowd's mood changed; it became like a victory parade for a Red Sox world championship. After watching the scene in the chilly damp night, being up all night and cooped up all day, it was extra sweet to hear the words "suspect in custody" over the police radio. Two hours earlier, I had been contemplating a second helping of chicken stirfry when the words rarely heard in Watertown came crackling over the scanner: "Shots fired." My wife, Jen, and I froze and then went into a frenzy. We grabbed our coats and every camera we could get our hands on and jumped in the car. The scene was just two blocks away. Mt…
