Waltham Teacher Receives Award

Jeanne M. Lenza was named 2013 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year

A Waltham teacher was named the 2013 Massachusetts History of Teacher during a ceremony Thursday. Jeanne M. Lenza, a 5th grade history teacher at the Thomas R. Plympton School in Waltham, received the honor as part of larger group of teachers who received honors. Lenza joined the school in 2007 as a third grade teacher. In 2009, she began teaching 5th grade. She received the award during a ceremony at the Museum of Science in Boston. “I thank these honorees for their deep commitment to preparing our students for success as responsible, productive citizens and as leaders within their communities,” Gov. Waltham School Choice Hearing to be Held Tonight

The hearing is held to decided wheter Waltham parents can send their students to another school district.

A public hearing to decide whether Waltham should participate in the School Choice program will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Waltham High School. The program allows parents to send their children to schools outside of their community, according to the Massachsuestts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Web site.

I am not a parent, but I am a Waltham taxpayer and voter. I am concerned about the cost of "school choice." Who would pay for the expense of transporting students out of Waltham to their chosen schools? Would the other communities be reimbursed for the burden of additional students from Waltham? I am opposed to school choice. If parents are unhappy with the Waltham schools, they should just move …   more ›

Waltham Educator to Sing National Anthem at Red Sox Game

Denise Gauvin, a veteran Waltham educator, plans to fulfill her lifelong dream soon by singing the National Anthem at Fenway Park.

Denise Gauvin will soon be able to cross one item off of her bucket list -- singing the National Anthem at a Boston Red Sox game. “It happened so fast, I can't quite wrap my mind around it,” Gauvin, a veteran special education teaching assistant at the Thomas R. Plympton Elementary School told Waltham Patch. “I'm walking on a cloud.” Gauvin is scheduled to sing the National Anthem at the start of the Wednesday, April 10 Red Sox game at Fenway Park, Gauvin said. However, there is no guarantee that her performance will be televised, she said. The Sox will play the Baltimore Orioles and the game will be televised on the New England Sports Network (NESN). New Principal Chosen for Waltham Elementary School

The new principal will be the school's third in two calendar years.

A new principal has been chosen to lead Henry Whittemore Elementary School. The Waltham Public Schools district has hired Ross Mulkerin to lead the Whittemore school, according to Superintendent Susan Nicholson. Mulkerin current serves as the assistant director of special services for the Binghamton City School District in New York, Nicholson said. Mulkerin will become the third principal of the Whittemore school in two calendar years. He will replace former principal Sara Lane, who abruptly left her post in January after less than year on the job. Prior to Lane’s departure, former principal Deborah Butts suddenly left her post saying the school needed a “change of leadership.” Mulkerin will start in Waltham sometime over the summer, …

Date Set for Waltham Schools Budget Hearing

The Waltham School Committee is starting the fiscal 2014 budget process.

The public hearing for the fiscal 2014 Waltham Public Schools budget will be held on Wednesday, April 3, according to a notice from the school district. The hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Waltham High School.
