Despite 9.5 inches of snow falling on Waltham today, Waltham Public Schools remained open today. Mayor Jeannette McCarthy plans to revamp the plowing system.
In the wake of the recent February blizzard, city officials on Monday, March 4, quibbled on how to improve the city’s snow-clearing system as new information emerged on the city’s performance during the storm. Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and Consolidated Public Works Director Michael Chiasson fielded City Councillors’ questions on the controversy for a little more than four hours during a meeting at City Hall. The meeting came weeks after residents and councilors complained about what they believed was the city’s poor performance in clearing sidewalks and roads after 25 inches of snow descended on the city. New system would be simpler to manage, mayor says.
Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy says she will implement a new, much simpler system to clear snow from the city’s roads. McCarthy, who announced on Feb. 12 that she would not seek another term, told Waltham Patch she plans to impose a new system under which four private contractors would plow the city’s streets, instead of the current system, which has many contractors covering different sections of the city. City-owned trucks and crews operate mostly on city-owned land. Also, McCarthy said she plans to switch to paying contractors on a per-inch basis instead of the current hourly rates. She said her new system would make supervision of contractors easier because the city would only oversee four instead of the 20-plus currently used. "…

Many parking meters in Waltham are still buried in snow.
The City of Waltham will not be enforcing parking meters today, Feb. 11, according to Waltham Traffic Engineer J. Michael Garvin. The decision comes after many parking meters are still surrounded by snow. Garvin said the city is still considering whether to enforce the meters on Tuesday, Feb. 12. This winter I have seen dozens of articles about plowing, snowfall and cancellations. The commenters who will claim to be "HARDY NEW ENGLANDERS!" don't sound like it.
