More Details on Increased Waltham Graduation Security

There were no specific threats against the graduation, according to Waltham's Acting Police Chief.

Waltham’s Acting Police Chief today shed more light on what prompted the increased security measures at Sunday’s Waltham High School graduation ceremony. Acting Police Chief Keith MacPherson, in an interview with Waltham Patch as he oversaw graduation security outside of John F. Kennedy Middle School on Sunday, said there were no “overt” threats or specific threats in connection with the graduation. He said police found some comments on social media outlets that he characterized as typical high school student chatter. MacPherson said he believed the comments appeared on Facebook. Greater Security Measures at Graduation Amid Safety Concerns

Unsubstantiated reports on social media of a possible incident at the graduation prompted the security measures.

In response to “unsubstantiated” social media chatter of a “potential” incident at Sunday’s Waltham High School graduation, school and city officials said in a statement the event would proceed. As a precaution, officials have imposed several security measures, according a statement from Mayor Jeannette McCarthy, Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson and the School Committee. The statement was emailed to reporters on Saturday afternoon. The graduation will begin at 2 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Middle School. The measures include: The statement did not specify what prompted the measures or detail the social media chatter.

"Bags were not allowed inside." OH REALLY??? I was there and there were people with all kinds of bags; handbags, tote bags, camera bags, etc. A lot of people ignored the requirements and they got in anyway! Great security!   more ›

Why doesn't this article have a tag somewhere saying "Updated story". The editor lets a flagrant mistake be published, Justabreezer then lets you know you screwed up. You then correct the errors of your way without letting anybody that already read the story know that you gave them the wrong info. Waltham High Schools Students Strive for Better Health

Students and organizations hold health fair.

Waltham High School students certainly did not have an excuse to eat poorly on Friday, May 3, especially since the school was holding its 3rd annual health fair that day. The fair, which began at 8 a.m., featured Waltham-based organizations' resources for helping students stay in shape and eat healthy. Students played video games that included exercise, performed Zumba and dance moves. Local organizations such as REACH Beyond Domestic Violence (a domestic violence assistanec organization) and others were on hand to showcase resources students have for living healthy lives. Heather Metallides, the director of health and science for grades 6- 12, said she hopes students use the additional resources to make healthy life choices. "It's not …

Waltham School Choice Hearing to be Held Tonight

The hearing is held to decided wheter Waltham parents can send their students to another school district.

A public hearing to decide whether Waltham should participate in the School Choice program will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Waltham High School. The program allows parents to send their children to schools outside of their community, according to the Massachsuestts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Web site.

I am not a parent, but I am a Waltham taxpayer and voter. I am concerned about the cost of "school choice." Who would pay for the expense of transporting students out of Waltham to their chosen schools? Would the other communities be reimbursed for the burden of additional students from Waltham? I am opposed to school choice. If parents are unhappy with the Waltham schools, they should just move …   more ›

Citywide PTO Meeting Coming Soon

The meeting will be held on April 25.

A citywide PTO meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Canon Lecture Hall at Waltham High School on April 25, according to the city's website.  The meetings are typically information session for parent son the latest schools issues. Parents are also free to aks questions of school officials.
