Waltham to Further Study Temporary Medical Marijuana Ban

Under a proposed moratorium, Waltham would temporarily prohibit medical marijuana centers from opening in the city.

Waltham officials plan to further explore a proposed moratorium that would prohibit medical marijuana shops from opening until April 2014.  Councillors, during a Monday, April 8 public hearing at Waltham City Hall, reviewed the moratorium proposal that is intended to give city officials additional time to figure out where medical marijuana stores can be located. If approved, medical marijuana centers would be prohibited from opening until after April 2, 2014.  The Board of Survey & Planning also joined the hearing. Under state law, each county would have at least one medical marijuana center and a maximum of five. After some debate, the issue was referred to the Ordinance & Rules Committee. I am in favor of a year moritorium. Let's see how this works out in other communities. Since these facilities need to grow their own I can see theft of the product as a real issue. We have more than enough illegal use of marijuana in the city so we should be cautious.   more ›

Proposed Medical Marijuana Moratorium to be Reviewed Tonight

Waltham officials have are seeking more time to finalize medical marijuana center regulations.

The public hearing for a proposed temporary moratorium on medical marijuana centers in Waltham will be held tonight, April 8, at 8 p.m. The hearing will be held at Waltham City Hall. and residents are welcome to attend and voice their opinion. City councillors are seeking the temporary to give them more time to review and possibly change zoning regulations that would govern where potential future medical marijuana centers could open.  In 2012, voters approved allowing medical marijuana centers to open in Massachusetts.

Waltham City Council Seeking Medical Marijuana Moratorium

A public hearing on the issue will be held on Monday, April 8.

Waltham city officials are seeking a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana stores opening in the city, according to City Councillor Ed Tarallo.  A public hearing will be held on Monday, April 8, at 8 p.m. at City Hall to review a proposed moratorium on the opening of any medical marijuana facilities, according to Tarallo. The proposal is intended to give city official time to review regulations for potential future medical marijuana centers, Tarallo said.  Technically, the proposal would be made through a zoning rules amendment. I'm sure a MM store in Waltham would be wildly popular. I doubt we would have many more potheads than we have already. What they should do is tax it appropriately and make sure that it is run by organized, ethical, business people who will scrupulously follow the law. Waltham Citywide Cleanup Coming Soon

The annual Waltham Citywide Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 20, according to the city's website.  Between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., volunteers will pick up trash throughout the city in effort to clean up Waltham.  To register for the event, contact Assistant Director of the  Consolidated Department of Public Works Stu LaCrosse at 781-314-3100 or slacrosse@city.waltham.ma.us. The rain date is April 21.

Waltham City Council to Review Home Renovation Rules Tonight

A proposed zoning amendement would prohibit homeowners from making certain renovations.

Tonight, City Councillors will discuss proposed changes to zoning rules that would hinder some homeowners from making certain renovations. The public hearing will begin at around 8 p.m. at Waltham City Hall. The public is welcome to attend and speak during the hearing. After the hearing, the issue will be sent to a subcommittee for further review. If eventually approved, some homeowners would be prohibited from finishing attics and basement. City Councillor Robert Logan, however, said the rules are intended to better manage growth and density in Waltham.

Sidewalk Snow-Clearing Requirement To Be Discussed Tonight

The ordinance would require residents to clear their sidewalks.

The proposed ordinance that would require residents to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks will be discussed tonight, March 4 at the City Council’s meeting. City Councillor Gary Marchese proposed the idea recently after hearing of residents’ concerns of sidewalks not cleared during the recent blizzard. The issue will be discussed at the City Council’s Committee of the Whole Meeting at 8 p.m. at City Hall. Currently, the city requires property owners on Main Street to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of the last snowfall. That regulation applies to both sides of the street from Prospect Hill Road to Linden Street.

I also live on a corner lot and the snow pushed up aproxly 7 feet. I have a 11/24 snow blower and it would not clear a path. Why can't the snow be plowed down the street so the corner would not that much snow. Forget walking the cars can not see around the corner.........   more ›

Who Should Run For Waltham Mayor?

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy does not plan to seek re-election.

With Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy announcing she will not seek re-election in the 2015 mayoral race, the city is guaranteed a fresh face in City Hall's corner office. Already, City Councillor Thomas Stanley has said he is considering a run, but nobody else has publicly announced their plans to run. Who do you want to see become the next mayor of Waltham?
