New Business Opening on Main Street Tomorrow

The store will move into the Main Street Marketplace in Waltham.

A new cell phone store will open at the Main Street Marketplace on Thursday, May 2, according to a press release. The Wireless Experience, an authorized retailer of AT & T, will open at 1030 Main St. will hold it's grand opening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 2, according to a company press release. Former New England Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak will be there to celebrate the opening.  The family owned and operated chain of cell phone stores opened in 1998 and has since epanded to 40 stores throughout Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. The store will join iParty, GNC, MassageEnvy, European Wax Center, Doctors Express and Aspen Dental which are already operating at the site. Also, locations for Panera Bread, …

J & N Joke Shop plans to close on May 31.

By the end of May, Moody Street will have another empty storefront. The J & N Joke Shop plans to close its retail store on May 31 and continue selling costumes on line. That will leave a vacancy at 329 Moody St. What do you want to see move into that location? It is readily accessible by foot, bus and car and is in surrounded by restaurants and other retail stores. I remember stopping in at Liggetts with my Nana after going in Grover Cronins and sitting at the snack bar and getting a dish of Vanilla ice cream. Thom McGann's, Woolworths and the snack bar, Archer Kent. There was a girl's clothes store too but I can't remember the name of it (it had light blue bags with an emblem on it). Citing Concerns, Waltham Councillors Withdraw Zoning Amendment

If approved, the rules would have prohibited some homeowners from finishing their attics or basements.

After expressing concerns, the Waltham City Council withdrew a proposal to amend zoning rules that would have prohibited some residents from renovating their homes. In a 14-0 vote during its Monday, March 25 meeting, the Council approved withdrawing the proposal. However, the changes could be proposed again in the future. As a result of the withdrawal, a scheduled public hearing was cancelled.  If approved, some homeowners would have been prohibited from finishing their attics or basements. City Councillor Robert Logan, who proposed the idea with City Councillor Ed Tarallo, said the amendment was intended to better manage development growth of commercial and residential buildings.  Logan and Tarallo requested the withdrawal as several …

Drug Maker to Add Jobs in Waltham

AstraZeneca plans to add jobs to its existing office in Waltham.

AstraZeneca plans to add 80 jobs to its Waltham office over the next two years as part of its global restructuring plan, according to the Boston Globe.  The jobs will be added to the drug maker's existing Waltham office to support other research centers, according to the newspaper. The hirings are part of a larger plan to elimiante 1,200 positions at the company's Delaware headquarters.  The company said the goal of the move is to attract additional bioscience workers and simplify its operations, according to the Globe.  More details.

Popular Waltham Eatery Announces Move

The restaurant hopes to open its new location in April.

In A Pickle, a popular Waltham eatery on Main Street, has announced its plans to move to a new location. Take a deep breath -- it is staying in Waltham. According to the its Facebook page, the restaurant plans to move to 265 Moody St. (the former Asian Grill) and hopes to open by the first week of April. The restaurant plans to close its current location on March 25.  "Our new location will have double the seating capacity, beer & wine, more comfortable seating, a better atmosphere and a couple of other surprises. New Preschool Facility Opening in Waltham

The preschool will open in the Waltham Watch Factory.

A new childcare center will soon open on Elm Street. ComunitiesUnited, Inc. plans to open its new “Waltham Creative Start” preschool on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 169 Elm St., according to a press release. The Watertown-based nonprofit previously operated a preschool at a city-owned building on Hall Street for 30 years, but recently struck a lease deal to move its services into the site.  CUI officials will hold a grand opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and give tours. The new 9,500 square feet facility features six new classrooms.  CUI also operates early childhood centers in Watertown, Woburn, Arlington and Newton.

Yes, you are correct -- the original Waltham Watch Factory is on Crescent Street. Apparently there were many factory buildings in Waltham in the 1800s and 1900s, the largest of which is the structure on Crescent Street. The landlord at 169 Elm Street reports that his building was formerly the American Watch Factory.   more ›
