Today is when some establishments honor Veterans Day, which means some businesses are open, but some are closed. Take a look below for a reminder of what's open or closed and what services are operating. Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion. Liquor stores: State law allows them to be open. The following is a letter to the editor from State Rep. Thomas Stanley. Veterans Day is a celebration to honor and thank America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. On Veterans Day, we are reminded of the worth of our freedom, as we pause to honor and remember the fallen and show our appreciation for those still among us. We recognize the millions of veterans we think of not just as veterans, but as neighbors, relatives, friends and colleagues. Our veterans and their families are all around us in our community, and they make great efforts to avoid recognition, and very rarely ask for help. Veterans Day is Nov. 12.
Waltham will mark Veterans Day on Sunday, Nov. 11 with a ceremony on the City Common, according to the city webdite. At 11 a.m., the Allied Veterans' Council and the Waltham Veterans' Services Department will host a a ceremony to honor Waltham veterans followed by a seperate Circle of Rememberance brick dedication during which new bricks will be dedicated for Waltham veterans.

Local vets shares war stories with Waltham students.
Students at Waltham's McDevitt Middle School marked Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 9 by hearing from veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Vietnam. Retired U.S. Marine Corporal Patrick Hart, of Waltham shared his experiences in Vietnam as did U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Joel Bashear, from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan where he is deployed at the moment.
