Stay tuned to Waltham Patch for updates on whether Waltham Public Schools will close on Tuesday, March 19.
With several inches of snow forecasted for Waltham for Tuesday, you are likely wondering whether Waltham will cancel public schools. Here is how the decision will be made, which we have based on prior Waltham Patch reporting. Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson makes the final decision based upon consultation with Waltham Police Officer Ann Frassica, the district's safety officer, Consolidated Public Works Director Michael Chiasson and Mayor Jeannette McCarthy. The decision must be made by 5 a.m. to accomodate staff that live outside of Waltham. City officials focus on the condition of the sidewalks in their decision making process because many students in Waltham walk to school or to a bus stop. After the decision is …
Up to 8 inches could fall in town on Monday night and during the day Tuesday.
Spring begins Wednesday, but Old Man Winter wants to get in one more whack before winter goes away. Forecasters predict as much as 8 inches of snow could fall in the Waltham area tonight into Tuesday. Nevertheless, the rain/snow line falls just west of Boston, meaning Waltham could see more rain than snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Waltham area beginning at 9 p.m. Monday and lasting through 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Look out for heavy snow and ice, and between 4 and 8 inches of snow, according the NWS warning. Snow will likely make Tuesday morning's commute a difficult one, the NWS warns. WHDH Channel 7 meteorologist Jeremy Reiner predicts that snow will begin falling between 11 p.m. Monday and 1 a.…

The issue will be discussed at the March 4 City Council meeting.
In the wake of the recent blizzard, City Councillor Gary Marchese has proposed an ordinance that would require residents to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks. “It is, I think, an important issue that all the councillors should debate and determine whether we need an ordinance,” Marchese said during the Monday, Feb. 25, City Council meeting. The Committee of the Whole will discuss the idea at its Monday, March 4, meeting at City Hall. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. Currently, the city requires property owners on Main Street to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of the last snowfall. That regulation applies to both sides of the street from Prospect Hill Road to Linden Street. Marchese's idea emerged after Waltham Patch readers and …

Will Waltham get pummeled this weekend with more than a foot of snow or will it be a half-foot with rain mixed in? The NWS said 6 inches of snow or more is possible and warned of heavy wet snow that may fall at 1 to 2 inches per hour. Snow may mix with rain in the Waltham area. The NWS warned that the heavy wet snow could bring down tree limbs and result in scattered power outages. Channel 7 meteorologist Pete Bouchard wrote on his weather blog: Storm start-up still looks like Saturday afternoon. We'll still be able to get around and the amounts will be light through midnight - in fact, we may even mix from Boston to the South …
