Waltham voted for Elizabeth Warren and owns more hybrid cards than the state average.
Waltham is green and blue: That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Waltham, 18.8 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) dropped a bombshell on Thursday night when he told reporters following a speech in Nashua, N.H., that he wouldn't rule out a run for Senate in New Hampshire. "I'm not going to rule out anything right now," he said. Brown, who represented Massachusetts in the Senate from 2009 to 2012, owns a vacation home in Rye, N.H., so it's not that far-fetched. Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody said Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll shows he is in a strong position to run in 2014.
Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll this week show former Senator Scott Brown is more popular than he was when he lost his re-election bid last fall and is in a strong position to run for governor in 2014. The independent, nonpartisan poll surveyed 600 Massachusetts registered voters between Saturday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 5. With regard to Brown, the poll — which asked voters for their opinions on whether they would vote for Brown if he runs for governor — showed he has considerable bipartisan support, with 32.7 percent saying they are very likely to vote for him and 26 percent somewhat likely. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. With news that Sen. John Kerry may be tapped as the Obama White House's nominee for Secretary of State, Markey said he will "seriously consider" making a run if the vacancy is announced.
Congressman Ed Markey told reporters he was "seriously considering" a run for Senate, should Sen. John Kerry be tapped as President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of state. Markey, who represents Waltham, made the remarks to reporters at Malden City Hall, following a press conference regarding the city's proposed minor league baseball park. "I hope that John Kerry does become secretary of state; he will be a great secretary of state," Markey said. "When that announcement is made I will seriously consider looking at ... (the seat). Massachusetts Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren has been chosen for a seat on the Senate's Banking Committee, according to the Huffington Post, which cited several sources. Warren, a Democrat who helped create the federal government's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, defeated incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown in the November election. Gov. Deval Patrick won't run again, and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray wants the job. So do Treasurer Steve Grossman and 2010 Republican candidate Charlie Baker. Who do you think should run for governor?
Lt. Gov. Tim Murray could not hold out any longer. On Thursday, he told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce he'd like to be governor, according to WBUR. Mind you, he didn't say he would run, just that he wants to be governor. With the election two years away, starting an official campaign now would be a bit premature. But Murray's not alone. Governor Deval Patrick has said he will not run in 2014, leaving the door open for Murray and a host of other aspirants for the office. State treasurer Steve Grossman and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker have also expressed interest in a run in 2014. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014.
