Applications due next month.
The search for new permanent principal for the James Fitzgerald Elementary School is progressing. The Waltham Public Schools District has started seeking applications for the position, which are due Feb. 8, according to interim superintendent Anne Marie Carr-Reardon. The district is seeking to replace former principal Alice Shull, who retired last June. Former Waltham teacher Charles McInnis is serving as the acting principal until the end of the year. Officials are hoping this search process turns out better than the prior two. Mayor: Opening school would be unsafe for children walking to school.
The recent snow storm forced the Waltham Public Schools closed on Wednesday and Thursday and last night the district announced it would cancel school today, a third consecutive day, something many other area districts have not done. The following is a statement by Mayor Jeanette McCarthy on the decision to close school today: "The decision to close school today was based on safety concerns alone. Waltham schools have a lot of walkers at all levels. The last thing we want to see is a child getting hurt. I understand that decision created a problem for working parents. Sidewalks deemed unsafe.
Although the city's roads may be passable, Waltham Public Schools will be closed tomorrow — the third consecutive day. "Due to road and sidewalk conditions deemed to be unsafe for our school children by the Dept. of Public Works, school will be cancelled on Friday, January 14, 2011," Interim Superintendent Anne Marie Carr-Reardon wrote in an e-mail to school staff at 5:11 p.m. this afternoon. Yesterday's snow storm forced school closed Wednesday and Thursday. School Committee member Lisa Limonciello said that snow is still piled high on many sidewalks making it dagerous for children walking to school. “The kids have to be able to walk,” she said.
