Large-Capacity Gun Permits Soar in Waltham

See how many gun permits were issued in Waltham over the past five years.

The Beretta 92 pistol. The SPAS-12 shotgun. These are examples of the types of large-capacity firearms for which permits have increased 24 percent in Waltham since 2008, according to state records. Ownership permits for smaller-capacity firearms have moderately fluctuated. 'Large-capacity' firearms are defined by the state of Massachusetts as semi-automatic handguns or rifles with the capacity of more than 10 ammunition rounds in their magazines and shotguns capable of having more than five shells. The numbers have emerged as state and federal officials have recently proposed new gun restrictions, and imposed others, in the wake of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. NRA Calls for "Armed Security" Around Schools

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.

In an amazing Friday morning press conference, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, Conn. and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family, our …

Grocery clerks! Wow Paul you are a real comedian, please share another joke. I did not hear LaPierre mention protecting eggs, bread and cereal with armed guards, he just mentioned children, the president and valuable items. I find it disgusting that you even make the comparison. Banning weapons and eliminating shows will not take guns of the streets, people looking to commit crimes will still …   more ›

Patch Will Go Dark Briefly Friday Morning to Mark Moment of Silence for Newtown Victims

One week after the Newtown massacre, Patch and much of the Web world will go dark briefly at 9:30 Friday morning to join in the tribute to the kids and teachers.

Patch is among the many websites which will display a tribute to victims of the Sandy Hook shooting over their sites tomorrow, Friday, at 9:30 a.m. According to Patch's sister site Techcrunch, the online campaign was inspired by a call for a moment of silence by Connecticut’s governor — and follows a coalition of tech leaders calling for more gun control. Techcrunch writes: The awareness strategy seems inspired by the SOPA [Stop Online Piracy Act] website blackouts from January. Instead of completely blocking functionality of participating websites, though, the tribute message can be closed to resume normal browsing. Alternatively, people can click a link in the message to find out what else they can do to aid the campaign. The moment of …
