For Waltham Band, 'Waltham,' Success Started at Home
It all started with mullets, tight pants and a killer '80s style.
In the late '90s, when rap rock reigned and Fred Durst was king, two brothers from Waltham found inspiration in a legend from the past. "One day we heard Rick Springfield, while we were cutting the grass, and I was like, who is this?' said Dave Pino, 33, lead guitarist for the band Waltham. "Whoever it is, this guy's hilarious." And so, a five-guy band was transformed with mullets, tight pants and all. Pino, joined by his brother and lead singer, Frank, rhythm guitarist Tony Monaco, drummer Darryl Grant and bassist David "Jones" Illsley, gave a Springfield-inspired show one winter night in 1998 and got a reaction they did not expect.
