Prepare for additional requirements this year.
Massachusetts rang in the New Year with a host of new laws that took effect Jan. 1. The measures were passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Deval Patrick. Here's a sampling of the new laws: House Bill 4935 makes health care for those with autism "more affordable," according to Patrick. Senate Bill 2469 imposes penalties on school athletic programs that do not take steps to prevent and monitor students who have suffered head injuries. The law actually took effect last year, though the penalty stipulation kicked in Jan. 1. House Bill 4285 requires coolant and antifreeze sold in the state to contain a bittering agent that prevents the toxic substances from being ingested. The law is aimed at protecting young children and animals. …

The Skellig rocked 2010 away with booze, entertainment and fun.
The Skellig rocked into 2011 on New Years Eve with a smashing party featuring live entertainment, plenty of alcohol and fun-loving partygoers. Some took to the dance floor, while others relaxed with a cold brew, family and friends.

1. The repeal of the alcohol tax goes into effect today. Expect your alcohol to be a little cheaper. 2. Gore Place's new storage exhibit is open today, featuring 19th century boxes. 3. Gov. Deval Patrick has not yet appointed anybody to replace the late Middlesex County Sheriff James Diapola, as was believed he would. 4. The roads will be less congested today as many businesses are closed and no high school athletic games are scheduled. 5. Work off your holiday weight and New Years Eve consequences by taking a walk at Prospect Hill Park.

Ring in the New Year in Waltham.
As you make plans with friends, your significant other, or the television remote, consider the following options for ringing in the New Year in Waltham. 1. Waltham High School's girls' hockey team will face off against Natick's girls' team at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Rink. 2. Gore Place will open its new exhibit titled Storage with Style: Thinking Outside the Box starting at 1 p.m. 3. The Skellig is holding a New Year's Eve Party starting at 7 p.m. 4. Boston will hold its annual First Night. 5. Visit Tempo: American Bistro for a champagne and toast at midnight, as well as dancing. Reservations required.
