Some Waltham Patch readers have called for the city to hire additional municipal workers and equipment to clear now, but do you agree? The question has emerged in the wake of City Councillors recently criticizing Mayor Jeannette McCarthy for not having enough equipment and workers to handle the February blizzard. She plans to revamp the plowing system. Consolidated Public Works Director Michael Chiasson ahs said told McCarthy he does not has enough equipment and that additional equipment is slated for future purchase. Mayor Jeannette McCarthy plans to revamp the plowing system.
In the wake of the recent February blizzard, city officials on Monday, March 4, quibbled on how to improve the city’s snow-clearing system as new information emerged on the city’s performance during the storm. Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and Consolidated Public Works Director Michael Chiasson fielded City Councillors’ questions on the controversy for a little more than four hours during a meeting at City Hall. The meeting came weeks after residents and councilors complained about what they believed was the city’s poor performance in clearing sidewalks and roads after 25 inches of snow descended on the city. New director will start next month.
The Waltham City Council last night confirmed Michael Chiasson as the city’s new Director of the Consolidated Department of Public Works. Chiasson, a Waltham resident, was unanimously appointed with a start date of July 1. “I just wanted to thank the mayor and the council for their approval tonight and my family,” he said of his wife, two sons and new baby. “I look forward to working with you. Chiasson will replace former CPW Director John Tashjian who took early retirement in July. Chiasson’s term will fill the remaining months of Tashjian’s term, which is set to expire in February. Council will take final vote on candidate tonight.
The City Council is poised to appoint Michael J. Chiasson as the new Director of the Consolidated Public Works Department, according to City Councillor Thomas Curtin. The council last week tentatively approved appointing him to replace former director John Tashjian, who took early retirement earlier this year. Chiasson, a Waltham resident, currently works as the Water/Sewer Superintendent for the Town of Weymouth. He said he has experience in various public works fields such as trash pickup, cemetery management as well as dealing with unionized public employees. If approved, Chiasson would serve out the Tashjian’s term, which expires in February of next year. Stay tuned to Patch For updates on this story

After the Blizzard this year I saw numerous sidewalk plows with one tail light and they were barely able to even plow because they were so slow. also the only time I saw them was at 11 o'clock at night trying to rush so they could have school the next day. why aren't they are out all day long? Maybe instead of 3 days of school off it would've only been two.   more ›
