Waltham officials plan to further explore a proposed moratorium that would prohibit medical marijuana shops from opening until April 2014. Councillors, during a Monday, April 8 public hearing at Waltham City Hall, reviewed the moratorium proposal that is intended to give city officials additional time to figure out where medical marijuana stores can be located. If approved, medical marijuana centers would be prohibited from opening until after April 2, 2014. The Board of Survey & Planning also joined the hearing. Waltham officials have are seeking more time to finalize medical marijuana center regulations.
The public hearing for a proposed temporary moratorium on medical marijuana centers in Waltham will be held tonight, April 8, at 8 p.m. The hearing will be held at Waltham City Hall. and residents are welcome to attend and voice their opinion. City councillors are seeking the temporary to give them more time to review and possibly change zoning regulations that would govern where potential future medical marijuana centers could open. In 2012, voters approved allowing medical marijuana centers to open in Massachusetts.

A public hearing will be held on Monday, April 8, at 8 p.m. at City Hall to review a proposed moratorium on the opening of any medical marijuana facilities, according to Tarallo. Waltham officials are reviewing zoning regulations for potential medical marijuana dispensaries.
Waltham City Councillors have begun a review of city zoning regulations that could restrict where medical marijuana dispensaries could operate in the city. City Councillor Robert Logan, on Dec. 20 said that the city's Ordinance & Rules Committee had started discussing the issue during a recent meeting. The meeting comes after City Councillor Daniel Romard, during a Dec. 10 City Council meeting, asked the committee to start reviewing the regulations. Romard, on Dec. 10, said he was concerned Waltham had not yet undertaken such a review. Medical marijuana is coming to Massachusetts. The question is: where? The medical marijana ballot initiative that passed in Tuesdays election with 63 percent voter approval means that up to 35 medical marijuana dispensaries can open up in the state in 2013. The new law goes into effect January 1, but requires rules and regulations be set up by the Department of Public Health. Some towns and cities, such as Quincy, reportedly are already trying to line up regulations that would keep dispensaries out of their municipalities, which have proved troublesome in some of the nine states where medical marijuana dispensaries have been legal. I am in favor of a year moritorium. Let's see how this works out in other communities. Since these facilities need to grow their own I can see theft of the product as a real issue. We have more than enough illegal use of marijuana in the city so we should be cautious.   more ›
