McCarthy had planned to serve only two terms.
Contrary to what she promised years ago, Mayor Jeanette McCarthy announced today she will run for a third term. McCarthy's campaign manager, Robert DiGregorio, confirmed the announcement to Waltham Patch, after the mayor announced her decision in a letter to the Waltham News Tribune. He said she had pledged to only serve two terms when she took office in 2003. The election is in November. “Being a woman of her word, she was very conflicted on it,” DiGregorio said of McCarthy, 57. Though it is not swimming season yet, officials say Waltham residents have something to look forward to this summer — the reconstruction of Connors Memorial Pool. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation, which owns the pool located at 330 River St., closed the dilapidated facility in 2001. It had been deemed unsafe and the DCR lacked money to restore it, according to spokesman Wendy Fox. The state, however, is now investing $4.6 million dollars into the reconstruction of the entire pool, and says it is scheduled to reopen next summer, according to Fox. State rules homeowners at legal risk for not shoveling sidewalks.
In the wake of a state court's ruling, Waltham has no plans to change its snow clearing policy, or lack thereof. Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said the city is not planning to propose a new bylaw to require residents to shovel their sidewalks, despite the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling on the case, Papadopoulos v. Target Corporation. Regardless of the ruling, the city was already taking steps to help residents avoid dangerous situations. "While there is currently no ordinance in the City of Waltham that requires residents to clear their walks," the City's website reads, "it is strongly encouraged to ensure safe pedestrian passage."
