The following was submitted as a letter to the editor by State Reps. Thomas Stanley, Michael Barrett and John Lawn. We are proud to represent a city so rich with history, especially as we celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the Francis Cabot Lowell at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham. Though many of us drive by the “Mill” every day, few people are aware of its special historical contribution to Waltham, the Commonwealth, and the nation. In 1810, Francis Cabot Lowell, during a time when the nation still depended on other countries for manufactured goods, visited the mills of Manchester, England and saw both power spinning mills and power weaving mills. Lawn easily defeated his Republican challenger.
State Rep. John Lawn bested Republican challenger Francis Stanton in the race for the 10th Middlesex state representative seat. Lawn easily slid to victory with 10,406 total votes to Stanton's 3,290, according to election results. In Watertown, Lawn received 3,211 votes to Stanton's 684. In Newton, Lawn received 1,775 votes to Stanton's 492. In Waltham, Lawn got 5,420 votes to Stanton's 2,114. Speaking at his victory party at The Gaff, a Waltham bar, Lawn said he would start the new legislative term by focusing on three priorities — jobs, the fate of the Fernald property in Waltham and repealing the statute of limitations on prosecuting sexual abuse of children. State Rep. John Lawn won a special election for the 10th Middlesex State Representative seat last year, and the Watertown Democrat is being challenged by Waltham Republican Francis Stanton. State Rep. John Lawn (D-Watertown) faced off against Republican challenger Francis Stanton earlier this month in a debate for the 10th Middlesex District state representative seat. Lawn, who is a former Watertown town councilor, was elected in 2011 after a special election to fill the seat formerly held by Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian. Koutoujian, who had served as state representative for more than a decade, was appointed to the sheriff position following the death of Sheriff James DiPaola. Stanton, a 24-year-old Waltham native, told Patch in April that he felt compelled to run for the seat to give "a choice for voters in November." Francis Stanton is challenging incumbent John lawn for the 10th Middlesex district seat.
Francis Stanton, a young Waltham man, will officially kickoff his campaign next month. Stanton, a 24 year-old Republican, is challenging incumbent John Lawn, D-Watertown, for the 10th Middlesex district seat. The seat covers parts of Waltham, Newton and Watertown. The campaign will officially launch on at 7 p.m., June 6 at Shopper's Cafe in Waltham, according to a press release. The event, during which Stanton will introduce himself to voters, is open to the public. Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Stanton is a Democrat. He is a Republican. Also, the event is on June 6, not June 10 as previously reported.

A young Waltham Republican is challenging State Rep. John Lawn in the coming election. Francis Stanton, a 24 year-old Waltham native, told Waltham Patch yesterday he is running for the 10th Middlesex state representative seat in the fall election. The seat includes parts of Waltham, Watertown, and Newton. Stanton, a 2006 Waltham High School graduate, said he was running for a couple of reasons. First, he wanted to make sure Lawn, a Watertown Democrat, did not run unopposed. Having been in office for about 10 months, Watertown’s John Lawn is preparing to run for a second term for the 10th Middlesex House seat, which represents parts of Waltham, Watertown and Newton. “I’m enjoying it,” said Lawn, who replaced Peter Koutoujian and won a Special Election last May. “There has certainly been a learning curve. The election's eventual winner, John Lawn, raised more than $47,000
In the short, five-month period of campaigning for the 10th Middlesex state representative special election, candidates raised more than $100,000 and spent more than $96,000. According to reports from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance, the spending reports covered activity from January 1 to May 30 of this year. John Lawn, the election's eventual winner, raised the most money at just over $47,000. Lawn beat out three other Democrats in an April primary election including Newton Alderman Allan Ciccone Jr., Waltham City Councilor Gary Marchese and Waltham resident Sean Durkee.
