Weather forecasters are predicting at least six inches of snow with a foot of snow possible.
Will Waltham get pummeled this weekend with more than a foot of snow or will it be a half-foot with rain mixed in? The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. The NWS said 6 inches of snow or more is possible and warned of heavy wet snow that may fall at 1 to 2 inches per hour. Snow may mix with rain in the Waltham area. The NWS warned that the heavy wet snow could bring down tree limbs and result in scattered power outages. With the snow pelting down and piling up, a deliberate act of kindness could be invaluable in helping an older adult to be safe over the next few days. UPDATE, 3:53 p.m.: Waltham Public Schools will be closed tomorrow. ---- UPDATE, 11:02 a.m.: Starting at 2 p.m., limited MBTA subway and bus service will run on the Red, Orange, Blue lines between Orient Heights and Government Center, and Green Line between Kenmore and Lechmere, according to MBTA.com/weather. Limited bus service will also operate on the 1, 23, 28, 39, and Silver Line Washington Street in Newton only. Customers are encouraged to stay home and "use service sparingly," if possible, the website said. Commuter rail routes will remain suspended through Sunday. Forecasters say the storm could be a doozy, with up to 20 inches of snow in Waltham.
UPDATE - 4:05 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Waltham and surrounding areas from Friday night through Saturday morning. According to the watch, "The worst of the storm will be Friday night into Saturday morning," with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour possible. "Travel may become nearly impossible with blowing and drifting snow."
