Waltham Girls' Basketball Falls To An Early Deficit

After trailing 12-points early, Waltham girls' basketball was unable to come back.

An early deficit proved too much for the Lady Hawks Friday night. After hitting an early scoring drought, Waltham girls' varsity basketball (1-7, 1-5) fell 62-33 to Lincoln-Sudbury High School (5-3, 4-2) at home. “Lincoln-Sudbury is a very well-rounded and well-coached team,” Waltham head coach Denise Nugent said. “In spurts, we kept up with them pretty well and I am proud of our effort.” The Warriors' starters opened with a 12-point run which created a lead they would hold onto all game. A three-point jumper and a layup by Warriors sophomore Ashley Lutz helped finish off the drive for L-S. “I felt like things were going well with the starters,” L-S head coach Liza Feldman said. “Until people needed a break or I felt like I saw something …

Waltham Girls' Basketball Defeats Tyngsborough

Leadership guides Waltham to victory.

Relying on senior leadership, the Waltham girls basketball team weathered a mid-game scoring drought and went on to defeat Tyngsborough, 54-42, Friday night. Nadja Kern and Alex Cercone, the two Hawks’ senior captains, combined to score more than half of their team’s points and helped Waltham improve to 2-6 on the season. Kern netted 17 points while Cercone had 14 points. “Alex and Nadja are two fantastic captains who are great leaders and great role models, et cetera, et cetera,” said Waltham head coach Rachael Turkington. “For them to come together, and put their game plans together like that, and lead their team like that, is fantastic.” Cercone, a center, proved a formidable presence at the beginning of the game. She drained a basket …

Waltham Boys' Hockey loses to Lincoln-Sudbury

Coach frustrated.

It's not how you start that counts, it's how you finish. Waltham High School boys' varsity hockey team found that out the hard way Monday, Jan. 3, at Veteran's Rink, dropping a 3-2 decision to longtime rival Arlington taking the lead 2-0 early in the first period. It was a stirring loss after closing out 2010 last week with a 4-1, victory against Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. Coach John Maguire expressed frustration with his team's performance. "I think tonight once we got up early they thought it was going to be easier than it was.  Obviously ,when you start thinking that, we aren't going to be very good," he said. The Hawks opened the game strong. Getting on the board just 56 seconds in after Waltham's Mike Cushera took a feed in…

Waltham's Girls' Varsity Hockey Loses Final Game of 2010

Natick bests the Hawks.

Waltham High School's girls' varsity hockey team closed out the year with a tough loss to visiting Natick yesterday at Veteran's Rink in Waltham.  While it was much better than the 7-0 pasting they received on opening night Saturday, December 11th, the Hawks still had trouble finding the back of the net in the 5-1 loss, something that head coach Jack Heavey says has been an issue all year. "That's all it's really been this year … the lack of scoring," he said. "We play some good defense and we get some solid goaltending, but we can't put all three phases together yet.  We're improving though … so it's all I can really ask for." The Hawks came out of the locker room strong to start the game, playing a strong possession game and trying to …

Waltham Hockey Cruises to Victory Against Lincoln-Sudbury

Waltham's Chris Maguire scored a hat trick.

Forward Chris Maguire and goalie Patrick Jordan led the Waltham High School boys' varsity hockey team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School on Wednesday night. The Hawks took  a 3-1 lead after two periods and finished strong, which according to Head Coach John Maguire had been a point of emphasis heading into the contest. "I thought tonight we finished the game," Maguire said. "It's the first third period all year we've won." The two teams traded offensive opportunities early before Chris Maguire scored the game's first goal with 3:36 remaining in the first period. Defenseman Tyler Trelegan took a hard slap shot from the blue line that resulted in a long rebound opportunity for Chris Maguire, who jammed it in …

Waltham Boys Freshman Hoops Teams Loses to Natick

Hawks lose by double digits.

For most young adults, freshman year of high school is a time of transition — becoming used to new people and building a foundation for what some call the "best four years of your life." For Waltham High School boys' freshman basketball team, it was a step back last night, athletically speaking, on that road of transition. The Hawks were dominated by a quicker, bigger Natick squad in a 74-37 game at Connors Gym at Waltham High School. The loss dropped the Hawks to 1-2 early in the season, prompting head coach Steve Laforest to claim his squad was not ready to play early on in the game. "We were real flat to start out," he said. "You can't come out like we did and expect good things to happen. We need to get off to a better start. Once we …
