Waltham Girls' Basketball Falls To An Early Deficit

After trailing 12-points early, Waltham girls' basketball was unable to come back.

An early deficit proved too much for the Lady Hawks Friday night. After hitting an early scoring drought, Waltham girls' varsity basketball (1-7, 1-5) fell 62-33 to Lincoln-Sudbury High School (5-3, 4-2) at home. “Lincoln-Sudbury is a very well-rounded and well-coached team,” Waltham head coach Denise Nugent said. “In spurts, we kept up with them pretty well and I am proud of our effort.” The Warriors' starters opened with a 12-point run which created a lead they would hold onto all game. A three-point jumper and a layup by Warriors sophomore Ashley Lutz helped finish off the drive for L-S. “I felt like things were going well with the starters,” L-S head coach Liza Feldman said. “Until people needed a break or I felt like I saw something …

Waltham Girls' Basketball Defeats Tyngsborough

Leadership guides Waltham to victory.

Relying on senior leadership, the Waltham girls basketball team weathered a mid-game scoring drought and went on to defeat Tyngsborough, 54-42, Friday night. Nadja Kern and Alex Cercone, the two Hawks’ senior captains, combined to score more than half of their team’s points and helped Waltham improve to 2-6 on the season. Kern netted 17 points while Cercone had 14 points. “Alex and Nadja are two fantastic captains who are great leaders and great role models, et cetera, et cetera,” said Waltham head coach Rachael Turkington. “For them to come together, and put their game plans together like that, and lead their team like that, is fantastic.” Cercone, a center, proved a formidable presence at the beginning of the game. She drained a basket …

Waltham Girls' Hockey Loses to Concord-Carlisle

Waltham pleased with team's effort.

It was not a win, but Waltham High School’s girls’ varsity hockey team 5-3 loss last night showed they don’t fall without a fight.  After going down 3-0 halfway through the second period, and 4-1 early in the third, the Hawks mustered a furious comeback with five minutes left in the game, nearly stunning the visiting Concord-Carlisle High School Patriots. “I’m proud of the effort,” Waltham coach Jack Heavey said. “We showed some resolve and fought back after getting down what could have been by a pretty big margin.  The girls hung in there and that’s really all I can ask.”  The game started with a scoreless first period. Each team traded a fair amount of scoring chances and some solid neutral zone play. Hawks goalie Ronelle Leblanc came up…

Waltham's Girls' Varsity Hockey Loses Final Game of 2010

Natick bests the Hawks.

Waltham High School's girls' varsity hockey team closed out the year with a tough loss to visiting Natick yesterday at Veteran's Rink in Waltham.  While it was much better than the 7-0 pasting they received on opening night Saturday, December 11th, the Hawks still had trouble finding the back of the net in the 5-1 loss, something that head coach Jack Heavey says has been an issue all year. "That's all it's really been this year … the lack of scoring," he said. "We play some good defense and we get some solid goaltending, but we can't put all three phases together yet.  We're improving though … so it's all I can really ask for." The Hawks came out of the locker room strong to start the game, playing a strong possession game and trying to …
