Five Guys, Chipotle, Panera Bread Location Approved

Permits for all three restaurants were approved after months of delays.

The Waltham City Council at its meeting on Monday night approved special permits for three restaurant chains.  Five Guys, Chipotle and Panera Bread will be located at the Main Street Marketplace at 1030 Main. Specifically, the approval means the developer, 1030 Main St. LLC., can reduce the number of required parking spaces.  The approval comes after months of delays partly caused by mistakes in the construction of the site.  None of the restaurants have publicly said when they would open. iParty, Aspen Dental, Doctor Express, Massage Envy and SuperCuts are already operating at the site.

I know there were some changes in the plans that weren't approved, but I don't understand why five parking spaces makes such a difference in opening! Yes, food establishments take more spaces than retail, but I'm tired of excuses of it not at ALL being the Special Permit people. It was red tape and power being waved around.   more ›

I've been to Moe's several times, one trip the food is great, the next trip same meal will be mediocre. It's been real hit or miss, I would definitely go to Chipotle over Moe's given the choice.   more ›

Why is the city council getting grief for enforcing laws? Parking shortages cause real problems for residents near developments. The developers get to swoop in, build whatever they can get away with, and swoop out, leaving politicians, police officers, and abutters with long-lasting problems that manifest themselves long after the developers make their money. Wake up, people!   more ›

TELL US: Should Waltham City Council Have Power Over Fast Food Permits?

Some have said the fast food permit process is too arduous.

With so many fast food and fast casual restaurants planning to come to Waltham, some Waltham Patch readers have objected to allowing the City Council approve permits to operate. City regulations require any business wanting to operate a fast food establishment or a drive-thru window must receive a special permit from the City Council. However, that process can take months and require many meetings with City Council subcomitteees. Boloco, which had planned to open a location in Waltham, cancelled its plans after months of meetings with the City Council and its committees. In it letter to the city, CEO John Pepper slammed the "incredible bureaucracy" of the process to receive the permit.  What do you think? Should the Waltham City Council …
