Former WHS Basketball Player Turns Successful Coach

Matt Ryan is now using his love of the game to coach high school and regional girls' basketball teams.

When Matt Ryan returns to Waltham High School this year, he will be trying to defeat the school in a basketball game, instead of helping them win. Ryan, a 2006 Waltham High School graduate, will take to the basketball court where he was once a varsity player, but this time he will be the coach of Bedford High School’s varsity basketball team. “I guess I have mixed emotions, but it’s exciting,” Ryan said. “I can’t wait.” At just 23 years old, Ryan has been told that he is probably the youngest high school coach in the state. He is not, however, new to the world of girls' basketball. Waltham Hockey Cruises to Victory Against Lincoln-Sudbury

Waltham's Chris Maguire scored a hat trick.

Forward Chris Maguire and goalie Patrick Jordan led the Waltham High School boys' varsity hockey team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School on Wednesday night. The Hawks took  a 3-1 lead after two periods and finished strong, which according to Head Coach John Maguire had been a point of emphasis heading into the contest. "I thought tonight we finished the game," Maguire said. "It's the first third period all year we've won." The two teams traded offensive opportunities early before Chris Maguire scored the game's first goal with 3:36 remaining in the first period.
