Economy Takes Toll On Waltham Food Pantry

Pantry needs volunteers and food.

Times are tough and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Food Pantry just can’t keep up with demand. Larry Zastrea and his wife Barbara, who have managed the pantry for several years, say the economic recession has taken its toll on their operation. They are asking for assistance — more food and volunteers. “We definitely saw an increase in 2010. We used to help 80 people a week and in the past year it went to 100 [people] a week,” Larry Zastrea said. The situation was evident in during the recent holiday season.  “This year,” he said referring to this past Thanksgiving, “we ran out of turkeys and people who weren’t in our computer came in [and got them first]. Some of our regulars didn’t get turkeys. So next year, we’ll do it differently.” …
