Denise... Great memories! I was sent to the Whittemore school, from Vernon Street, for 4th. grade in the class of Ms. Gallagher. We were bussed, daily, from the Newhall School, an effort to balance class sizes with no racial overtones then. In the late Spring of 1960, during the waning 4 grade days there, my cub scout troop planted a weeping willow tree in the front of the Whittemore School, I was selected to toss the first shovel-full of dirt onto the roots. My hand was on the tree trunk, about as large around as the end of a baseball bat, with a few other boys, when the tree was placed into the pre-dug hole. In renovating the school, it is apparent that my weeping willow tree was eliminated. I just wanted to share the story of how the tree got there and who put it into the ground and why. It was Arbor Day, late April or early May, 1960.
Best,
Jeff Gallant, of 48 Vernon Street, Waltham, 1954-1962.
