The Inspiration of Young Musicians

The Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra’s 26th Holiday Pops was a splendid affair, with great refreshments, super raffles, and, of course, the wonderful music of the season.  Music Director Michael Korn and Associate Director Ray Daniels led the musicians in a fine performance of favorites, like Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and beloved holiday songs.

A special treat, however, were two young violinists, Gabriel Korn and Masha Shabalina, who enchanted the audience with their solo performances in Riedling’s Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 35.  These talented youngsters demonstrated their love of and commitment to classical music, and helped the WPO to showcase the young talent that we encourage all through our season as part of our Education and Outreach Program.

Gabriel Korn, “Gabey” to family and friends, has been playing violin since the age of five, studying with Alexey Shabalin.  He is also a judo champion and loves football more than anything.  He lives in Sharon with his parents, his brother, and sister.

On Saturday, May 3rd, the WPO will present “South of the Border,” with the participation of the children of the Plympton School, Waltham.  We are so pleased to have these young people engaged in this artistic endeavor, which will provide fine entertainment for our audience.  This concert will also feature the winner of the WPO’s 2014 Student Concerto Competition, which takes place on Sunday, January 12th.  Each year, student musicians up to high school age may compete for the opportunity to play with the WPO as a featured soloist.  We’ve had many wonderful young musicians play over the years; their performances have actually been quite astonishing.  If you are, or if you know, a young musician who may be interested in applying, the application is on this website:  http://wphil.org/?page_id=34

If that link doesn’t work, just go to our home page at www.wphil.org, and look for the notice (“Apply Now!”).
