Meet the WPO All Over Waltham!

The Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra plays most of its regular concerts at the Kennedy Middle School in Waltham, and the Holiday Pops at the American Legion Post 440 in Newton.  However, our Board and Boosters (as we fondly call our volunteers) can be found throughout the year, presenting and attending various events and introducing ourselves to all our neighbors!

Over the years, one place where we could be, and still can be, found is at the Common on Waltham Day (many of you may remember that it used to be called “The Mayor’s Picnic”) in the fall.  Board members and volunteers set up a booth with flyers, brochures, e-mail sign-up cards, and lots of information about who we are and how and why we love to make beautiful music to share with everyone.  (Photos above are from Waltham Day 2013).

We’ve engendered a great deal of interest in the WPO, just by conversing with people who stop either to compliment us or react with pleasant surprise because they hadn’t realized that Waltham has its very own Philharmonic.  We have not only increased our audience and e-mail list this way, but have also increased our musician enrollment.  Our musicians are semi-pro, amateur, and student, and all play on a volunteer basis.  The wonderful thing is that we have so many who have joined the WPO and stayed with us, several musicians over decades!

At this time, the WPO produces flyers in English and Spanish (thanks to Marisela and Antonio!), but we want to encourage all our friends and neighbors of all backgrounds and nationalities to come and enjoy the pleasure of our live performances.  Our wish is to produce flyers in additional languages—if you’d like to volunteer to translate, please contact us at admin@wphil.org.  (You can also sign up for our e-mail list this way; our list is not shared with anyone.)

Our volunteers contribute so much to our success, and as time goes on, we hope to extend our outreach even further.  An important part of our Education and Outreach Program is offering free admission to children who are accompanied by a paying adult.  We’d love to see all of you filling up the auditorium and enjoying great music, practically right in your back yard.

A future blog will feature our Boosters and the invaluable work they do behind the scenes to make our concerts and events successful; as mentioned above, we couldn’t do it without them!

The WPO has held a fundraising auction at the Charles River Museum of Industry, and even hosted a Steampunk-themed dance at SuperShag Dance Studios on Moody Street—so you never know just where we’ll pop up with many opportunities to speak to us, have fun, and learn more about the orchestra.

We’re always happy to meet new people and participate in community events and boost community spirit.  We welcome everyone who has an interest in music, whether it’s classical or any other kind.  Music plays such a fulfilling role in our lives, and it’s a pleasure and privilege to be able to share our music with you.

Reminder:  Don't miss our upcoming concert on February 15th!
