Should You Consider Canceling Your ACT Test Scores?

By: Jackie Nicoll, Huntington Center Director

This past Saturday, high school students fromWaltham and throughout the region took the ACT college readiness assessment exam. Like the SAT exam, the taking of this test is the culmination or months of preparation.

While both the ACT and SAT exams test a student’s knowledge, there are specific strategies and techniques that can help you before and during the exam. What many students don’t consider is that there is also a strategy to consider after the exam. For some students, that involves deciding if you should take the exam again to improve your composite score, or in some cases, if you should cancel your scores.

The decision to cancel your scores shouldn’t be taken lightly, but there are times when it should be an option. If you feel that, despite your preparation, you didn’t perform at your best during the exam, you might want to consider canceling your scores. You may also consider canceling your scores if your calculator malfunctioned during the exam.

If you are thinking about canceling this past Saturday’s ACT score, you will need to move quickly.  You only have a couple of days following each exam to cancel where your scores are sent. If you need to add, change, or cancel your college choices, or correct your high school code, you have until Thursday at noon (CT) to contact ACT Student Services.  They can be reached at 319-337-1270. If you are taking the next SAT exam in January, you should also keep this option in mind, as you have until the Wednesday after the exam to cancel your SAT scores.

You can also delete your scores from ACT’s records. This must be done in writing, by contacting ACT Institutional Services. Deleting your test date record likely will not delete the records schools that have already received, but it may be an option to consider if you are unhappy with a previous score and plan to apply to additional schools.
