Missing Persons?

I have heard some rumblings from some of my fellow Fitz parents who were wondering why not one School Committee member attended the meeting with Fitz parents and Superintendent Nicholson on Monday.

As I noted earlier, two candidates who are running for the three open seats, Michelle Kosboth and Susan Monfette, were in attendance.  Kosboth, who has a son entering first grade at Stanley, maintains a blog http://kosbothforschoolcommittee.blogspot.com and a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/KosbothForWalthamSchoolCommittee.  Monfette has a daughter entering kindergarten at the Fitzgerald.  She also has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/susan.monfette.5?fref=ts and a Web site http://www.susanmonfette.com.

Full disclosure: Monfette's daughter attended pre-school with my youngest son.

The question is whether sitting Committee members should have been at the Fitzgerald meeting or not.  There was a School Committee meeting right after our meeting, so it would not have been an additional burden to the Committee members to attend.  And, since the elephant is the room is the turnover of elementary school leadership district-wide, it seems that meeting with 50 concerned parents at a school that has had three principals in five years may have been a good enough reason to come.  Parents vote, and parents who have kids in school vote for School Committee members.

To be honest, I hadn't thought about the absence of any of the SC members until Kosboth and Monfette came and some very wise parents brought to my attention that not one sitting member was there.

What do you think?  Should sitting School Committee members have come to the meeting?  Should Dr. Nicholson have assigned one or two members to attend the meeting and, perhaps, assist her in answering our questions?  Or asked the SC members to follow up on some of our concerns?
