Color Me Relieved

Mayor McCarthy hosted Fitzgerald parents (aka the Fitz Fightforce), four School Committee members, several City Councillors, and other various constituents at the beautifully reappointed Community and Cultural Center tonight. There were no crazy guys with pitchforks, I am happy to report.

The issues raised by the attendees focused on the lack of a systematic plan that directs communication, lack of consistent leadership, and the lack of transparency, by which I mean the lack of a method of getting rid of all of the hidden agendas and preconceived notions. The solutions included implementing channels to improve communications between School Committee members and each elementary school in the District, and including parents on subcommittees where appropriate.

I was pleased with the meeting overall, however, a point brought up by a parent near the end of our meeting is haunting me. My kids are getting older. Quickly. Will my oldest ever be in an elementary school that isn't plagued by turnover?  What about my younger son?  When are the changes coming?
We learned tonight that a consultant has been hired to look at the space needs at the elementary school level. The data requested from the consultant will be available in November. So when will it be implemented?  how much longer do we need to wait for lasting and meaningful change?
