Walk, Bike & Drive at your own peril!

Dear Editor:
Poor planning by the City is becoming more evident in the lack of and/or sloppily painted lines on our streets.  Our streets are often missing road surface markings such as stop lines, divider lines, cross walk lines, bike lane lines and other essential safety indicators.  Long periods of time pass before street lines are repainted or refreshed, which creates safety hazards for our drivers, pedestrians and bikers.
Some of our streets are in a deplorable condition, due to missing street markings, resulting from poor planning.  Without a proper plan, the City cannot budget for hiring adequate staff to promote and facilitate this type of work.  Currently, the City has only had two employees performing street line painting.  With proper planning, we can purchase the necessary equipment and fill the appropriate number of positions to keep our streets safe for all.
Painting our street lines sets an example that we care about maintaining our streets and keeping them in good conditions.  Proper surface markings on our streets protect drivers, pedestrians and bikers, and can also prevent traffic jams, wasted time, and potentially dangerous driving conditions.  The City needs to make financial planning a priority to properly maintain our streets.
