Is it practical having a School Committee where the majority of members are unable to negotiate teacher contracts?

School Committee Members are responsible for negotiating and voting on teacher contracts as one of their primary duties.  Negotiations and new contracts at times can take years to settle for one reason or another.

However three current school committee members are unable to perform this duty because of a conflict of interest.  Which means they have a family member employed by the schools.  If half of the six-elected School Committee cannot perform a part of their duty, then you should ask yourself why are they on the committee to begin with?

For this upcoming election two candidates running for office: Lisa Limonciello, Incumbent, and Steve Rando, who has held a seat previously, both have a conflict of interest and they would need to excuse themselves from negotiating and voting on teacher contracts. I find this to be troublesome.

We as a city need to effectively and efficiently handle our responsibilities so we can continue to make growth and progress.   If Lisa Limonciello and Steve Rando would be elected on November 5th, it would make a total of four-elected School Committee members unable to negotiate or vote on the teacher contracts. I am concerned, as all should be, with the fact that candidates can be elected for positions that they cannot completely fulfill.  Waltham residents should make note of this issue.

I, Susan Monfette am a candidate running for School Committee and I do not have any conflict of interests in negotiating or voting on teacher contracts.  I encourage Waltham citizens to take a closer look at who is running.
