Vitamin D Levels Require Attention with Shorter, Colder Days

As New Englanders begin to enjoy apple picking, vibrant foliage and the many other joys of autumn, it is important to keep in mind that shorter days and less sunlight can impact vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D, which is best obtained through natural sunlight, is most well-known for promoting the body’s bone health. Since sunlight can be harder to come by during the fall and winter months, we must seek alternatives to the sun to get our required vitamin D.

According to a study in Nutrition Journal, 42 percent of American adults are deficient in vitamin D. People that have a vitamin D deficiency are more susceptible to developing certain complications, such as osteoporosis and in more extreme cases, certain types of cancers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you don’t have a winter trip planned for Florida – don’t worry. There are many ways to ensure an adequate intake of vitamin D.

Consume vitamin D: A great place to start is by taking a look at your typical diet. Simple alterations can be made so that more vitamin D is consumed daily. Vitamin D is naturally found in fatty fish, like swordfish or salmon, so by replacing your typical meat of choice with fish a few times a week can give your vitamin D levels an easy boost. Milk is also an excellent source, along with eggs, and some fortified juices and cereals.

Take a supplement: If you’re having trouble absorbing the necessary levels through your diet you should consider taking a supplement. Make sure to consult with your pharmacist when selecting a supplement to ensure you select the right product.

Brave the elements: The days may be shorter and the weather may be colder, but there is no substitute for natural sunlight, so try to get outside once a day, no matter how daunting it may seem. Taking a break from work for a lap around the block can do wonders, not only for your vitamin D levels, but also for your mental health.
