Waltham Football Team Falls To Lincoln-Sudbury

The Lincoln-Sudbury football team continued its winning ways with an easy 49-6 victory over the Waltham Hawks at Leary Field in Waltham on Thursday night.

The Warriors jumped on the Hawks early with a kick return for a touchdown by Dan Cellucci. Brian Carroll followed with 20-yard run for a score, and Lincoln-Sudbury started on a third long drive to end the first quarter. The drive ended on the first play of the second quarter with a 22-yard pass from Matt Cahill to Carroll.

Up 21-0 with more than 10 minutes to go in the half, coach Tom Lopez began to insert some of his reserves into the game.

“I was pleased with the way everyone played tonight from start to finish.” Lopez said.

Malik Layne and Henry Guild were two of those reserves that took advantage of their opportunities. Guild continued his strong running from last week with a touchdown on a quarterback keeper to make the score 28-0.

After a fumble by Waltham, Lincoln-Sudbury drove down field after runs by Greg Roder, John Sexton, and Layne. Layne finished off the drive with the first of his two touchdowns on a 2-yard run to make the score 35-0 right before the half.  

“Malik played very well for us tonight,” Coach Lopez said. “He’s done a great job for us all year playing behind Chris Giorgio.”

Benjamin Colello started the second half at quarterback for Lincoln-Sudbury, and after another Waltham turnover, he promptly moved the offense quickly down field setting up Layne’s second touchdown from 2 yards out to make the score 42-0.

Waltham finally started to move the ball down the field at the end of the third quarter, but turned it over again with their third fumble of the game.

The Warriors took advantage of the turnover to start the fourth quarter as Sam Colello ran for a 15-yard touchdown to finish out Sudbury’s scoring. Waltham scored their lone touchdown with about 2 minutes left in the game on a 20-yard run by Ken Morantos. The score was set up by a bad snap on a Lincoln-Sudbury punt. This was the one error in a relatively mistake-free game for Lincoln-Sudbury.

Lincoln-Sudbury looks to extend their undefeated streak to six games next week on Oct. 14 at Wayland.
