Stellar Waltham Season Ends in State Semifinal

After a strong season, the locals' season came to a screeching halt on Saturday.

It was a spectacular season for the Waltham High School football season. But on Saturday, it came to a screeching halt at the hands of a juggernaut Mansfield team.

The Hawks lost for just the third time this year as the Hornets dominated from start to finish and went on to a 41-0 win in the Division 2 state semifinal. Mansfield advanced to play St. John's Shrewsbury with the win while Waltham's season came to a close in defeat.

Waltham struggled on both sides of the ball, notching just one first down in the first half as they went into the locker room trailing 35-0.

On their opening possession, the Hawks went three-and-out and nearly turned the ball over on third down. Following the punt, Mansfield promptly marched down the field and into the end zone for a 7-0 edge.

By the end of the first quarter, it was 14-0, and the points continued to flow in the second as well. Waltham's offense could never find room to move, and the Hawks were held scoreless for the first time this year.

The Hawks officially close out their season on Wednesday night with a Thanksgiving Eve tilt on the road at Malden Catholic. Mansfield will play St. John's Shrewsbury for the state title on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Gillette Stadium.
