Waltham School Committee Approves New Teacher Contract

School Committee did not offer any specifics on the contract.

UPDATED, 2:05 p.m., with additional information from the contract and School Committee and mayor.

The contract starts now and runs until Aug. 31 2013. Teachers, nurses and paraprofessional would raise a 2.25 percent pay increase next year, according to a copy of the contract. Click on the photo box to the right to view a copy of the contract.

Also, the contract requires the WEA drop two unfair labor practices it had filed against the School COmmittee. The first stems from a dispute over the schedule at the middle schools. The WEA would also have to drop its threat to withdraw from the federal Race to The Top grant program.

Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said she was glad to have the issue settled.

"I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in settling this teachers’ contract," she said.

The teachers' union declined to comment.

The Waltham School Committee last night approved a new contract with the teachers' union, known as the Waltham Educators Association. 

The committee, during its Wednesday, April 25, meeting at approved a new conctract with the union,

The committee did not offer any specifics on the contract.

The committee, however, then had a heated and confusing debate over how to fund the contract. They never settled the issue with a vote. 

Over the past few months, teachers have complained that the School Committee was refusing to settle the contract, while the School Committee never publicly commented on the issue.
