Utility Work & The Impact on our Streets

Here in Waltham, a large majority of residents have been commenting about recently paved streets that are being dug up again.  I’m sure you are wondering why then we are having to repaving these streets?  Dale Street is a perfect example.  I feel the problem is a lack of communication and planning between the City and the utility companies.  At the very least, the utility companies should be required to return the street to the condition in which they found it.  Currently, issues arise when utility work is done and then the streets are closed up and left in less than desirable conditions, thus requiring re-paving with our City’s tax dollars.  These companies and the City need to work together for work that is planned over the next five years to avoid this problem of ruining streets that were recently paved.

There is also the problem of emergency repairs and how they are handled. I am proposing an ordinance similar to what other cities and towns require.  When taking out a permit to open a street for emergency repairs or upgrades the contractor would be required to post a bond for roughly $20,000 to ensure that repairs are done correctly.  The City would use the bond if the repairs were deemed insufficient.

As your City Councillor-At-Large I would work to enhance this process and improve communication.
