Waltham Mayor Says She Will Not Run Again

Mayor Jeanette McCarthy was first elected in 2003.

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy said today she will not seek re-election in the 2015 mayoral race.

McCarthy, whom Waltham Patch users have recently criticized for her handling of the snowstorm, said she told several city councilors in January 2012 that she would not seek a fourth term.

McCarthy, in an interview with Waltham Patch, said the recent criticism did not play a factor in her decision because she made the choice long before the storm.

"I have to take care of my parents," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said she told Councillors Paul Brasco, Tom Stanley and Diane LeBlanc in January 2012, whom she sees as the “top three vote-getters” in a mayoral race, she would not run again.

McCarthy, a longtime Waltham resident, was first elected mayor in 2003, and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011, according to City Clerk Russ Malone. McCarthy previously served two years as a Councillor-At-Large and six years on the Waltham School Committee, according to her city biography.

This is a very sad day for Waltham. I have admired how you have run our city during your time in office. You've conducted yourself with integrity and class. Despite the turmoil caused by the economy, Waltham still looks good, runs well, and is a great place to live. Thank you for all your hard work. I also took care of elderly parents, and it's definitely a full-time job, and not for the faint of heart. Best wishes to you.

Big Deal! She ran on term limits on her first election and what happened then? She kept extending the amount of time she wanted to run. Not everything in this city has gone down hill. However, under her watch we have lost a lot. We have also gained some. The south school, which is now a teen center has been redone and is beautiful. Mayor McCarthy still has to get us out of this mess and hopefully not put in another be fore she leaves. The is still work to do. Please don't think that by not running again the problem is solved. I will believe it when I see it!

She had a good run and made many improvements--including weeding out some dead wood and consolidating some departments. Still, the city departments seem to run in slow motion, and the benefits that city employees get are sucking up all our tax dollars. With the unions unwilling to negotiate, we are stuck putting more and more dollars into fat benefit packages, leaving less money for equipment and services.

Last night, after reading comment after comment regarding snow removal on the Patch, I decided to send an email to the mayor to express my concerns as a parent, homeowner, and individual who works in Waltham. The Mayor responded to my email within the hour with information. I have always been impressed with the Mayor's dedication and service to our community. She is an outstanding leader.

I wish the mayor well. While I may not agree with some decisions, her and her office have always been quick to respond to questions I may have. Hopefully we will get some quality candidates who will have a vision plan for the next 10-20 years for the city and how we can achieve those goals. The city has a lot ahead of it and hopefully we will get someone who understands the uniqueness of the city and the different needs for each part of town.

Very Sad News, She is a Wonderful Mayor!

Could she and the Council set term limits before she goes. Far too much patranism in the city. Time for break up the "in" crowd and move in new blood.

All I ask is that Paul Branco to not be elected. Did people forget he and an off duty police officer showed up at one of brascos apartment to threaten someone to pay their rent. The guy called the police and it was swept under the rug. Very weird that a well known officer and councilor at larger face no punishment for this. An abuse of power for an officer to use his uniform to threaten someone else off duty. Shame on the city. Both should have resigned from their respective positions.

Too bad. While I understand that family matters come first, her leadership will be missed. I thought she was a very good mayor, and I will miss her, both personally and professionally. Good luck with your future endeavors.

Thank you, Mayor McCarthy, for all you have done. You are a true leader, have an obvious passion for Waltham, have been very engaged in the city, and made each resident feel like his or her issue counted. Best of luck, and maybe you will change your mind!

Molson, your comments are slander. You could be sued for that.

I absolutely agree with you Alice! There are numerous departments in the city and the benefits and salary they receive for the unskilled labor that they perform is ludicrous and way out of balance for the job they perform. I'm sorry to say that, and I am not putting down the "unskilled" labor force but the benefits these people receive is costing the citizens a fortune! I mean how many people does this city need to screw in a light bulb??

Thanks to Mayor McCarthy for all of years of great service, we'll be sorry to see you go. Best of luck in the future.

What is wrong with you people? She is a terrible leader and micro manager. She has driven off anyone who was qualified to run any departments in this city because of the way she acts. You people who are congratulating her on being a great leader are obviously walking around with blinders on your eyes.
Waltham Rezi February 13, 2013 at 11:06 PM
Molson, I absolutely agree with every word you said. Very suspicious.....
Matt Carter February 13, 2013 at 11:38 PM
Thank You. Finally someone who gets it. The Waste everyone is talking about that she cut is called the Equipment Fund. No New DPW, Fire Department of Police Department equipment has been funded in years except in the last few months when 6 New Police Cruisers were ordered and Funds were approved for a New Fire Truck. She still has no plans to replace any DPW equipment until 2018. She plans to surplus half the equipment out and sell it off instead of replacing it.

Did any of you people who are unhappy with her try to run against her, or even work for her opponent? I remind you that she won re-election last time by 6566 to 787.
Matt Carter February 14, 2013 at 03:53 PM
Frosty: The council recently approved $508,000 for a new Fire Engine for Engine 1 at Moody Street which is 19 Years old.
Matt Carter February 14, 2013 at 03:55 PM
And I was one of the 787.
Luis Rodriguez February 24, 2013 at 12:46 AM
Me too, I was one of the 787 people that wants to keep the Jeannette McCarthy (Mayor) in Waltham, MA. I do hope she would think about it more, I would hate for a new Mayor too ruin all the work she has done to the city of Waltham, Ma...
