Waltham Mayor Says She Will Not Run Again

Mayor Jeanette McCarthy was first elected in 2003.

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy said today she will not seek re-election in the 2015 mayoral race.

McCarthy, whom Waltham Patch users have recently criticized for her handling of the snowstorm, said she told several city councilors in January 2012 that she would not seek a fourth term.

McCarthy, in an interview with Waltham Patch, said the recent criticism did not play a factor in her decision because she made the choice long before the storm.

"I have to take care of my parents," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said she told Councillors Paul Brasco, Tom Stanley and Diane LeBlanc in January 2012, whom she sees as the “top three vote-getters” in a mayoral race, she would not run again.

McCarthy, a longtime Waltham resident, was first elected mayor in 2003, and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011, according to City Clerk Russ Malone. McCarthy previously served two years as a Councillor-At-Large and six years on the Waltham School Committee, according to her city biography.
