Waltham Mayor Details Potential Future Plans

McCarthy has served 10 years as Waltham's mayor.

Months after saying she would not seek reelection, Mayor Jeannette McCarthy said she will reconsider her decision.

In a brief interview with Waltham Patch on Thursday, McCarthy said some residents had asked her to reconsider her decision in the wake of her mother’s death in February.

“Will I reconsider? Yes. But, I have made no official determination,” McCarthy said.

The mayor did not say when she would make her final decision.

In February, prior to her mother’s death, McCarthy said she would not seek reelection, citing family reasons and the need for the city to have a competitive mayor’s race. Days later, McCarthy’s mother died.

McCarthy was elected in 2003 as the city's first female mayor and was reelected in 2007 and 2011.

If she does seek a fourth term, she would face City Councilor Thomas Stanley, who has said he will run for the office. No other potential candidates publicly announced their plans to run.
