Jared Remy Case Spurs Tougher Domestic Violence Bill

The Jared Remy case has led to a new domestic violence bill, which would delay bail for suspects, toughen penalties for offenders and train judges on related issues, according to WCVB.

Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo, D-Winthrop, and state Attorney General Martha Coakley crafted the new legislation, which is expected to be debated in the House next week.

DeLeo called the bill the most comprehensive overhaul of the state’s domestic violence laws in a generation, according to the news station.

Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, to death last August in their Waltham home. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
