Is Now the Time to Talk Gun Control?

Does the massacre at Newtown, CT, signal the need for a political debate on gun regulations?

Before officials had even held their first press conference Friday, Facebook was abuzz with status updates about the Newtown, CT, massacre. The statuses were split between those sending their condolences and those asking if the country would finally deal with the issue of gun control.

Some fought back, asking for respect and mourning before political debate began. Others remained fierce in their belief that stricter gun control regulations would have prevented such a mass killing, saying the victims were shot multiple times and with semi-automatic weapons, according to Fox News.

The guns were not illegal and were, in fact, owned by the shooter's mother. Among them were a semi-automatic .223 caliber bushmaster rifle and two handguns. Those who knew Nancy Lanza said guns were a hobby of hers.

Should the massacre in Newtown, CT, be the tipping point for political debate on gun control? Is there a need for stricter regulations? Tell us why in the comments.

Absolutely its long overdue! If you read the second amendment it states " the right to bear arms lawfully" I repeat LAWFULLY. which means to me that if the people if this country deem certain guns to be illegal for the general public such as ar-15s, and other high capacity high ammunition weapons. You're right to own that specific weapon is withheld by the constitution. I mean you can't own a grenade launcher which is also a gun in terms. Besides most Americans, I know I do, feel safer with less guns on the street. Not more. I rely on the police and FBI not vigilantly justice.. its the 21 century Not the 1800s and England I not a threat anymore!!!!

Therefore it is not unconstitutional to ban assault rifles just as it is not unconstitutional to ban chemical weapons from the general public or a turret gun or a bazooka...in America you will always have a right to bear arms. The question is which arms? Now if they banned all arms that would be unconstitutional and Obama especially where he taught constitutional law is quite aware of that. And had never even hinted at that once. Contrary to what popular Republican rhetoric says "Overall states with tighter gun controls have less gun violence " .. now you will hear that that is not true when they cherry pick a few states to compare but fact is OVERALL amongst all states together gun violence is lower in tighter gun control states, FACT!!!

Take it easy Charles. Better check your blood pressure. How about stop blaming the guns and provide more help for the mentally ill. That's who kill people!
charles jacob December 18, 2012 at 07:47 PM
Our love of guns in this country is out of control is all I'm saying. And I'm so sick of hearing that Obama's gonna take your guns rhetoric, and yeah 20 dead children gets me a bit angry! They're not all mentally ill btw some of the past massacres were done by people authorities say had no serious mental illness . What really scares me is those militias in the Midwest. Google Michigan militia or hutaree militia. They want to forcefully overthrow our government cause its "unconstitutional" and put in place they're right wing radical Christian ideologies and if you disagree with them you'll be shot type of government. I'm all set with that. Guns are in the hands largely of the wrong people. I believe. I am for handguns and single shot rifles. Anything more is ridiculous!

And the mentally ill argument ... so every gangbanger in the hood who shoots someone is mentally ill, every robbery where innocent poeople are killed is done by the mentally ill? I think not.

Why make this an either-or? How about stricter gun control (ban assault rifles and automatic weapons) AND better mental health care?
charles jacob December 18, 2012 at 09:40 PM
Alice, totally agreed!!!

AR-15's ARE single-shot rifles. Problem is, once you ban one thing, someone will find another. Say we banned extended clips (which are in MA), what's to say that someone can't bring 10 clips and two guns into a place and just keep reloading. If you banned guns outright, then people will use knives, if you ban knives they would use hammers (proof: http://www.wnd.com/2012/12/man-slashes-22-children-near-china-school/?cat_orig=world). Unfortunately the best thing is to strike a balance. Better mental healthcare and metal screening for new gun license applicants are a start.

If only the first victim, Adam Lanza's mother, had been a gun owner, she could have stopped this before it started...(Michael Moore)
charles jacob December 19, 2012 at 02:59 PM
Lol Michael Moore is such an idiot! Yeah the ar-15has no use in the general public I agree totally. And it is not just about mass killings its about radical groups arming themselves to the teeth and threatening to overthrow our beautiful nation because they don't agree with the politics. I understand our constitution allows this right to bear arms but it does not specify semiautomatic weapons. I mean why don't we just let people mount a turret gun on they're pickup truck. There are laws of the land and luckily for us we get to choose them. The government wont take your high capacity guns away, the people will!!!

Contrary to what the NRA has been shoving down ur throats for years.....Guns kill People, guns kill kids, guns kill 6 & 7 year old kids Guns splatter 6 & 7 year old kids' brains over classroom walls and floors! IT'S TIME TO STRENGTHEN GUN CONTROL LAWS!
charles jacob December 19, 2012 at 05:44 PM
Right on Cairo kid! ! Agreed
Buttercup December 19, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Teachers should be armed. They should go through the proper training & be allowed to carry firearms in school. At least it will give these children a fighting chance when some psychopath decides to kill innocents.
Buttercup December 19, 2012 at 10:04 PM
I totally agree Cairo kid!!!!!!

I think they should have a cop in every school I don't think they should have guns in school so to speak but an armed trained security guard or a school cop is a good idea to me
