Animal Hospital Proposed for Waltham
The new facility would be located on Second Avenue.
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals will present its plans for a new animal hospital in Waltham on Monday.
The MSPCA is planning to open a new animal hospital at 283 Second Ave., the site of the former Vetcision animal clinic, which recently closed, according MSPCA spokesman Rob Halpin.
While a lease has been signed for the property, Halpin said the organization, which currently operates Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, is still sorting out what services they would offer. Halpin, however, described it as an animal hospital. The new facility would take referrals for animals that need specialty care and offer shelter services for endangered animals, he said.
The MSPCA chose Waltham for its new facility partly because many of its existing clients live in the area, Halpin said.
"Waltham is a really strong Metrowest location," Halpin said.
Halpin could not specify an opening date but indicated it would be within months.First, however, the MSPCA must get a special permit to keep dogs overnight at the facility. The Waltham City Council on Monday will hear and discuss the MSPCA's permit application and then likely send the proposal to a subcommittee.
