Another Chance for Animal Shelters?

The City Council on Monday rejected a proposal to designate additional areas of the city in which animal shelters could operate.

However, City Councilor George Darcy said he plans to revamp the proposal and tailor it specifically for cat shelters. He plans to take it up at the Aug. 4 City Council meeting.

The vote comes in the wake of the Cat Connection’s proposal to open a cat shelter at the former North Waltham Library on Lexington Street. The zoning amendment, however, would not have applied to that area.

The 8-5 vote comes after the Ordinance & Rules Committee’s recommendation to deny the zoning change. The following councilors voted to deny the change: Kenneth Doucette, Joseph Giordano, Robert Logan, Gary Marchese, Daniel Romard, Stephen Rourke, Ed Tarallo and Robert Waddick. The Ordinance and Rules Committee made the recommendation saying the proposal was too broad.
