Waltham Man Honored for Sacrificing Life at the U.S. Capitol Building

Detective John Gibson, a Waltham native, gave his life while protecting the U.S. Capitol in 1998, and he was honored on July 24 by Sen. Edward Markey and others in Congress.

Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut died on July 24, 1998 while fending off a gunman who burst into the Capitol building, according to a release from Markey’s office.

“Today is a day to remind ourselves that every officer we pass, whether it’s in the hallways of the Capitol or the streets of Waltham, or anywhere in America, puts their life at risk every single day to keep us safe,” Markey said. “...Gibson was a hero to all of us here in the Capitol building, and represents the best of our law enforcement community."
